Brancott Reserve Sauvignon Blanc

I picked up a bottle of this New Zealand wine at Costco for about $14. Great buy. It has amazing grapefruit and lemongrass flavors with a nice acidity. I was hoping to save this bottle to share at my Christmas Bash but…didn’t happen. A nip here, a glass there and the next thing you know its gone.

Whites probably don’t come to mind during the winter months but this one is perfect for the holidays. Enjoy!

Kono Baru – 2006 Sauvignon Blanc

While we do try to be as experimental as we can, it does not exactly take a brilliant person to realize that there are a few more red wines on here than whites. So, in an attempt to liven things up a bit, I recently ventured beyond the safe confines of cabs and zins and bought a Sauvignon Blanc. With an upside down label. And a yellow fake plastic cork.

That said, it’s not like I was terribly adventurous: I paid less than $6, and picked up a bottle of perennial safe choice Los Vascos at the same time. I was, however, pleasantly surprised – not by the complexity or depth of taste (really, it had the lack of depth that one would expect from a cheap white), but by the fact is wasn’t really horrid. Whether or not you agree with this will likely depend on your opinion of grapefruit juice, as that is exclusively what this tastes like. I could, with a little effort, convince myself that grapefruit juice was mislabeled, incorrectly shipped, and somewhere in Boca Raton there’s a retirement community with some rather interesting post-breakfast parties.

Anyways, criticisms about the flavors that are there seem a bit too much when there’s nothing terribly wrong. It was $6, and I didn’t have any objections to drinking all of it. In this price range, that’s a bit of a compliment.
