I picked this one up at Central Market. 90 from wine spectator and $9? Yes, please. The thing is, when I got it home and drank it, I started to wonder if the label was in the wrong place. While I personally can’t find any solid information with which to confirm or deny this claim, I’m not sure I completely agree. I’m not entirely sure what grape varietal(s) this is, but it’s from the Bizero region of Spain.
It’s really heavy on the cherry flavors and perhaps a bit too brash and fruity for my taste. The “spice” and “oak” flavors that the bottle claims are too subdued to really even notice. That said, is there anything in here, being objective, that would explain why it would have a high score from the spectator? Maybe I’m just too much of an amateur, but I just don’t find this to be something new and exciting, such that I would pick it out of the pack and give it some accolade.
My recommendation – buy a bottle, have it with some food, but don’t get all excited that you picked up a “rated” wine for next to nothing.
